What the District Court Does

King County District Court handles misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor criminal cases, anti-harassment orders, domestic violence protection orders, infractions, felony preliminary hearings, search warrants, civil litigation matters up to $75,000, small claims matters up to $5,000, and more.

District Court is the Court where most Citizens of King County may have their first (and for many their only) experience with our justice system, whether as an accused, a victim seeking protection, or simply seeking the resolution of a dispute.

Summary Of Matt's Experience

Judge Matt Williams brings to the District Court broad and balanced legal experience as well as an exhaustive knowledge of the law. Matt has lived in Auburn, and before taking the Bench practiced law for 27 years. In his 31 years as a judge and attorney, Matt has worked to keep Washington State safe by training law enforcement officers in effective investigations, and protected the interests of every-day citizens in court. As a District Court Judge in King County, as well as a Pro-Tem Judge in Pierce County, and an Arbitrator in Pierce and King Counties, Matt delivered fair and reasoned decisions.

Judge Williams has spearheaded the implementation of technology solutions within our courts. He has developed and implemented specialized training for judges, and has served as an active member of the Rules and Education Committees of the Washington State District and Municipal Court Judge's Association.

Before taking the bench he served as an Assistant Washington State Attorney General where he tried cases, managed complex litigation and civil rights matters. While serving with the Iowa Department of Justice and the Nebraska Attorney General’s office, he prosecuted many cases on behalf of the citizens of those states ranging from simple criminal prosecutions, to complex post-conviction relief and death penalty appeals. Judge Williams is sought after by Prosecutor and Law Offices across the United States, as well as the US Department of Justice to bring his experience and insight into improving courtroom procedures around the world.

His broad prosecution, defense, civil, and judicial experience gives him the skills to address each case from a balanced perspective. Matt brings his national and international experiences back to SE King County as a frequent guest speaker within the Auburn School District. He is also deeply involved in our community. He has served as a Special Disciplinary Counsel for the Washington State Bar Association, a leader in his neighborhood community, and as an active advocate for and supporter of the Northwest Sarcoma Foundation.

“I’m running for re-election so that I can continue to bring to bear my experience in improving public safety and ensuring justice and fairness within the King County District Court. I want to continue to give back to the community in which my wife and I raised our daughters by keeping our neighbors and our community safe.”
